1. (in the Bible) the evil spirit of the wilderness to whom a scapegoat was sacrificed in the Mosaic ritual of atonement.
2. a) (traditionally) the chief of those angels who took wives among the daughters of men. He was taken prisoner by the angels and bound until the Day of Judgment. b) (in Muslim tradition) one of the jinn. c) (in Paradise Lost) an angel who rebelled with Satan.
